Most of the large retailers post their Black Friday ad scans, coupons and discount offers online beforehand to give consumers time to find out the sales and plan for their purchases.

Consumers are choosing to shop online more and more, not wanting to wait outside in the early morning chill with a crush of other shoppers. Often, many people show up for a small number of limited-time deals, such as large flat-screen televisions or laptops for a few hundred dollars.

For the online retailers, there is a similar type of day on the Monday following Thanksgiving Day which is known as Cyber Monday. Cyber Monday is known as the unofficial start of the online holiday shopping season as online shoppers go to their favorite online retailers to do their shopping.
