What is Rio Olympics?

The 2016 Summer Olympics are commonly known as Rio 2016, as this competition will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The host city of Rio de Janeiro was announced at the 121st IOC Session held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 2 October 2009.

International Olympic Committee has chosen three cities for this mega event. Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Summer Olympics, Pyeongchang for the 2018 Winter Olympics, and Tokyo for the 2020 Summer Olympics.

The 2016 Summer Olympics officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, and these games commonly known as Rio 2016, is a multi-sport major international multi-sport event in the tradition of the Olympic Games as governed by the International Olympic Committee.

On October 2nd, 2009 at the 121st IOC Session, IOC announced Rio de Janeiro as the host city. These Olympics games are the first games to be held in a Portuguese-speaking country.

Check the full schedule of the Rio Olympics 2016 at official Rio Website. The closing ceremony of RIO 2016 will take place on the evening of 21 August, Sunday in the Maracanã Stadium, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

More than 11000 athletes from 206 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) will participate in this event.

Total 306 sets of medals are available for 28 Olympic sports including golf and rugby sevens, which were added by the International Olympic Committee(IOC) in 2009.

All events will take place in the eighteen venues, seven temporary venues, and nine newly constructed venues. Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro, and Maracanã these cities will host these games.

The largest venue at the games concerning seating capacity is the Maracanã Stadium, officially known as Jornalista Mário Filho Stadium.

The athletes’ village of Rio 2016 is claimed to become the largest in the history of Olympics. Fittings will include about 80,000 chairs, 70,000 tables, 29,000 mattresses, 60,000 clothes hangers, 6,000 television sets and 10,000 smartphones.
